Why Intersectional Hybrid Peonies? The Background Story

The intersectional hybrid is a crossing between Herbaceous and Tree Peonies. These plants combine the best qualities of both types of Peony and are so desirable that people tried and failed for centuries to create them. Finally in 1948, Japanese nurseryman, Tochi Itoh, succeeded. Once the impossible had been achieved the stage was set for others to continue the work and we are pleased to be able to offer you a selection of fine examples created by American breeder Roger Anderson.

One of the original reasons for creating intersectional hybrids was to get yellow flowers onto a herbaceous plant. Today’s cultivars offer bright yellow flowers as well as some other fascinating colors and have huge flowers, up to 10” across. Fortunately they also have strong stems sturdy enough to keep them held proudly above the foliage.

Intersectional hybrids have a distinctively dome-shaped habit with flowers evenly spread over the plant. As many flowers are produced from side shoots they appear over a longer period of time, extending the blooming season. It is not uncommon for a mature plant to produce as many as 50 flowers. Not only that, if cut right back after flowering it may produce a second flush.

They are as hardy and easy to grow as herbaceous varieties but with increased vigor and foliage that stays green and lush right through till first frosts. Plants die right back in winter, as herbaceous types do, with fresh new shoots emerging each spring.
