Began exporting to Poland and Germany, shortly followed with the UK and US.

1980
Began growing and exporting the Darwin Plants range of perennial plants.

2001
Company changes trading name to Darwin Plants, having been using this name on the perennial plants catalogue since 1980.

Darwin Plants is the largest Dutch exporter of bare rooted perennial plants to both the US and Japan. Other markets served include the UK, Scandinavia, Germany, France and Canada.

Four generations down the line, Witteman & Co remains a family run business. Though the emphasis has shifted from growing to export, strong ties with plant growers and breeders remain, which is why we are able to offer such an extensive range of perennial plants,  including so many new and difficult-to-obtain varieties.

Location 
Darwin Plants is located in Hillegom, The Netherlands. In the heart of the bulb district, we are less than a mile from the world famous Keukenhof site. The Netherlands' temperate climate allows for a long growing season which in turn produces larger, healthier, better established plants. The Dutch are traditionally at the forefront when it comes to breeding and developing plants and Darwin Plants' long-standing relationships with those in the know enables us to be the first to offer many exciting new introductions to the trade. 

Darwin Plants Today...
We are the largest Dutch exporter of perennial plants to the US with a 30% share of the Dutch export market. We are also the  largest Dutch exporter of perennial plants to Japan with a 35% share of the Dutch export market. We have 100,000 square feet of warehouse space available. 450 acres of land in use for production of plants due for export through us. 

The Product
An annually updated catalogue of over 1000 bare root perennials available in multiples of 25. We can often source non-catalogue items for you (in quantities over 1000). A full range of pot-tags and display signs (bed cards) to complement our catalogue stock.
